Picasso: Love Him or Hate Him?
  + stars: | 2023-04-05 | by ( Deborah Solomon | April | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +14 min
It is not hugely cool to profess a love for Picasso these days. This is what Picasso’s detractors — like Hannah Gadsby, the Australian comedian and Picasso basher, who will help curate a Picasso show at the Brooklyn Museum opening on June 2 — often miss. Picasso, by contrast, brought the weight of lived experience into his work, even when he was tethered to archetypal subjects. “The Mother” (1901), an early painting by Picasso, shows a view of motherhood purged of Renaissance idealization. The conventional view of the painting holds that the women are “dolled-up cocottes,” as John Richardson glibly put it in his biography of Picasso.

REUTERS/Gonzalo FuentesPARIS, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Airbnb (ABNB.O) is offering a night for two in the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris this summer, transforming a box in the theatre into a plush bedroom with sweeping views of the famous auditorium. Before the pandemic, Airbnb had created other unusual overnight stays in the French capital, one of its key markets. The Palais Garnier stay includes a music recital, dinner in an ornate rehearsal room backstage and a behind-the-scenes tour of the elaborate 19th century building, including its underground pool, the inspiration for the phantom's lair in the book and musical. The Palais Garnier stay will be listed on March 1 for 37 euros, also the number on the box, one of the theatre's most prestigious, which will be decked out with antique furniture specially for the night. I think it will be a bit unreal," said Veronique Dubrulle Leroux, the great-granddaughter of Phantom of the Opera author Leroux, who will host the visitors.

[1/5] The gilded sculpture of Apollo on his chariot, part of a group of statues symbolising the sun god's journey created by Jean-Baptiste Tuby between 1668 and 1671, is lifted out of its basin as part of a major restoration of Apollo's fountain in the gardens at the Chateau de Versailles (Versailles Palace) in Versailles, France, December 6, 2022. REUTERS/Pascal RossignolVERSAILLES, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Apollo's Chariot Fountain was lifted from its base in the sumptuous gardens of the Palace of Versailles on Tuesday ahead of an 18-month restoration of the gilded lead sculpture celebrating the Greek god. Until now, restoration work had been limited to its surface. The restoration work will consist of disassembling the statues, with the 13 sculptures being restored and re-gilded, while the stone base will be strengthened. (And) with the horse riding events happening here, we'll have Apollo's Chariot, in majestic and flamboyant gold, as a backdrop for those Games", Pegard said.
Joy Curran , an executive assistant at Johnson & Johnson living in North Brunswick, N.J., on her 1970 Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda, as told to A.J. Growing up in New Jersey, my father and my mother’s brother had quite a few muscle cars, and by age 6, I was hooked. In particular, I gravitated to Chrysler muscle cars like the Dodge Challenger and the Plymouth Barracuda. I was able to save some money, and the first car I bought, when I was 16, was a 1970 Challenger. But unfortunately because I had a part-time job and school, I was not able to pay for the upkeep.
WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Argentina is nearing a deal on more than $2 billion it owes the Paris Club of creditors, economy minister Sergio Massa said on Thursday. "Argentina is close to an agreement with the Paris Club," Massa told Reuters on the sidelines of the IMF meetings in Washington. Massa had previously confirmed that he will meet the group in France on Oct. 27 and 28 to continue negotiations. He met the chair of the Paris Club, Emmanuel Moulin, in Washington on Thursday. The Paris Club, which counts the United States, Japan and Germany among its members, last year gave Argentina more time to repay the debt, allowing Buenos Aires to negotiate a revamp of its IMF program.

Writer Erica Lamberg has learned the hard way that the most important perk for a good travel credit card is no foreign transaction fees. Her go-to travel cards with no foreign transaction fees are the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. Upon returning home, when I opened my credit card statement, I gasped at the Euro fees on my credit card. Plus, the Travel Rewards card boasts a reliable rewards program — earn 1.5 points per $1 spent on all purchases. Another card I like is the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

Patru Oscaruri a luat pelicula lui Ron Howard, pentru cel mai bun film, regie, scenariu adaptat și actriță secundară (Jennifer Connelly).
